Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble

Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble (LYTE) nurtures the creative talents of young Tasmanians, through inspiring theatre workshops and productions.

Established in 1999, Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble (LYTE) is a respected youth company, that is committed to nurturing the creative talents of northern Tasmania’s young people.

Led by Jane Johnson, LYTE (formerly known as Second Storey Youth Theatre) has created an impressive body of work which has connected and inspired thousands of aspiring young performers around the state.

LYTE programs are centred around collaboration, confidence and creativity and are directed by professional artists, all of whom are tertiary theatre graduates. Students also work with a range of guest artists during the year (from Tasmania and interstate) exposing our young actors to a variety of theatrical techniques, forms and philosophies.

LYTE is a company for everyone, those who may wish to become actors and those who may not. No previous experience is required.

Being a member of LYTE is a fun, challenging and rewarding experience that develops creativity, confidence, communication skills and fabulous new friendships.

Our company values ensemble. We encourage all participants to use their voice, to take risks and to share their ideas while learning important life skills about team work, diversity and community.

LYTE is recognised, by both the community and arts industry, for producing skilled and professionally minded young actors. We nurture a vital stage in the development of young people, giving them practical skills and inspiring experiences, as well as a realistic perspective on training and the industry.

LYTE is incredibly proud of our actors involvement in community theatre productions, including Oliver (LMS), Les Miserables (Encore), The Cryptogram (CentrStage), and Waiting for Godot (Three River Theatre),

We have also seen a significant number of LYTE alumni move into tertiary arts training, at the SVPA and interstate institutions, and who are now in the emerging stages of their career.

We believe the arts are essential to a thriving community. The empowerment of young people is at the core of our practice. It is our hope that their experiences with LYTE build a deeper confidence and understanding of themselves and others that will help guide them in their lives.

We would love to welcome you to our company!
